Swan Lake in ROH Covent Garden/ Лебединое в Ковент Гарден


Прежде всего, прошу прощения за долгое молчание, дорогие друзья. В Лондон заезжала моя мама, и всю неделю я занималась выполнением культурной программы, о некоторых пунктах которой напишу позже подробно. Во вторник ходили, например, в Ковент Гарден на “Лебединое озеро” с примой театра Зенаидой Яновски. И, скажу я вам, что уровень исполнения первых ролей расстроил.

At last, I am back. I am very sorry for my lengthy silence, but since my mom was in town, I was busy sightseeing and attending concerts and other events. On Tuesday we went to see “Swan Lake” in ROH Covent Garden with prima Zenaida Janovsky. And I must say, that the leading roles were performed rather poorly.

Из хорошего можно отметить шикарные декорации и костюмы, плюс превосходный кордебалет. Поскольку я опять сидела на галерке в амфитеатре, я очень хорошо видела, что “лебеди” были абсолютно синхронны и техничны. Но это с учетом, что хореография сильно проще, чем в той же Мариинке (где в начале II акта лебеди выходят на одной ноге, а не на двух). Отличное было исполнение музыки оркестром. А маленькие дети чудесно исполнили pas de quatre.

Теперь про балет. Ни принц Зигфрид, ни прима Одетта/Одиллия не “прыгали” совсем (я имею в виду так, вместо чего были выполнены антраша). И если мужчине балеруну я как-то еще могу простить “непрыгучесть”, то вот то, что прима выполнила за весь балет только одну сложную фигуру (фуэте) и ни одного самостоятельного прыжка (они были заменены на массу растяжек и поддержек), очень печально. Па де де в III акте тоже  был заменен ходьбой, а в сольной партии Одетты убраны прыжки. В общем, впечатление осталось хорошее, но мне не хватило сложного балета.

Firstly, needless to say that Tchaikovsky music played by the orchestra was fantastic. I loved the set design and the costumes. The chorus was also great, synchronous and technically flawless. The 4 little swans were adorable and very precise in their dancing. Despite the general good impression of the performance, I was disappointed by the performance of the lead roles and simplified choreography in general. The swans entering in Act II did it on both feet, whereas in Mariinsky they enter the stage all slightly jumping on one foot as one, synchronised.

And, yes,  I can get over weak male roles (no jumps what so ever), but the lead female, prima Zenaida Yanowsky did scarce complicated figures (except one fouette). Most of Odile/Odette complicated parts were replaced by walking, stretching and numerous supports from the partner (no jumps again). In general it was a fine evening, filled with beautiful performance and music, but still lacking some of essentials elements of ballet.

  1. I’m impressed with your lexicon. Have you done ballet yourself, or just a fan?
    On another note, I have noted that even circus here in Europe is different. It’s more about the costumes and music than it is about performance. While the Russian circus is the opposite – not as colourful, but keeps you at the edge of your seat for the entire performance.

    • Harriet, thank you. No, I haven’t done any, it is just that I have been watching it from an early age in Mariinsky and discussed it with my mom, who’s a big fan. And you have to know the words to describe, what you saw. 🙂

      I haven’t been much to the circus to compare, but I know for sure about ballet, that there are certain things a high-class ballerina does to show the edge of here abilities. Things, that set a prima apart from all the others. But, please, don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed ROH a lot!
